The Employee Volunteer Opportunities Committee (EVOC) partnered with Habitat for Humanity during the recent school break week to build affordable housing in San Francisco. A group of 20 Dugoni School staff and faculty members helped with construction at Habitat Terrace, a development of 28 new homes in the Ocean View neighborhood of the city.
On Sept. 27 and 28, volunteers assisted with many aspects of the construction process, including painting, prepping for final painting, roofing, plumbing installation assistance, underground piping for landscape irrigation, landscape preparation, and many other punch work items and finishes.
Habitat for Humanity provided a unique volunteer experience, said several of the participants.
"We're tackling a hot-button social issue: affordable housing in San Francisco," said volunteer organizer Matthew Schueller, donor relations manager in the school's Development department and active participant in EVOC activities. "Volunteering with Habitat has an immediate impact and tangible results. When you drive or BART past the new development in the neighborhood, you can say "I built that!""
Habitat for Humanity builds homes for communities and gives the opportunity for families to help themselves. Their work helps families to break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security. With an affordable home, families have more to spend on food, medicine, education and other essentials.
The Employee Volunteer Opportunities Committee gives staff and faculty the chance to create and participate in volunteer opportunity to serve the community. Their goal is to organize at least one volunteer opportunity per quarter with a focus on issues outside the scope dentistry. Their hope is to address the issues that impact the quality of life for individuals in our community.
