A group of eight Dugoni School students recently enjoyed a visit to Peking University School of Stomatology to get a cross-cultural glimpse at life and dental education in Beijing, China.
They met with dental school students and faculty, observed care being provided in the school's clinics, toured the facilities and had an opportunity to meet Dr. Guo Chuan-bin, dean of Peking University School of Stomatology. They discussed some of the differences, similarities and unique aspects about the dental school experience from their perspectives as students and educators.
The Peking University hosts treated them to a celebratory dinner, and organized excursions around the city. The students had the opportunity to visit sights such as the famed Great Wall of China, Palace Museum (Forbidden City) and other cultural areas.
Other representatives from University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry travelling on the trip were Dean Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., Dr. Colin Wong ‘65, adjunct professor and member of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation (PDF) board and Gary Mitchell, a University of the Pacific Regent and PDF Board member.
The visit is part of a student exchange program the Dugoni School established with Peking University School of Stomatology and Wenzhou Medical College School of Stomatology in 2012. Students from the Peking University most recently visited the Dugoni School's San Francisco campus for two weeks in August 2013 to build their understanding of U.S. dental programs and American culture.
"It was such an amazing experience," said Dr. Amro El-Khatieb, IDS '16 (pictured below on far right). "The hospitality from faculty and students was overwhelming! It was my first visit to China, and seeing such rich culture was absolutely breathtaking."
In addition to its ties to Chinese dental schools, the Dugoni School maintains relationships with dental schools in Kuwait, Egypt, India and South America, among other locations. The school also supports international dental mission trips to Fiji and Jamaica each year.
