Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry faculty member Dr. Nejat Düzgüneş was recently honored during the seventh-annual Faculty Awards Recognition Dinner held Nov. 11 on University of the Pacific's main campus in Stockton. Düzgüneş was the recipient of the 2015 United Methodist University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award.
The award from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church recognizes outstanding faculty members for their dedication and contributions to their institutions. Recipients are nominated by members of the campus community. Selection is based on exceptional teaching, concern for students and colleagues, scholarly contribution and high professional and personal standards.
Düzgüneş was appointed chair of the Department of Microbiology in 1990, and has been a faculty member in the recently formed Department of Biomedical Sciences since 2010. He has authored or co-authored 169 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 55 book chapters. He has edited 14 books and five journal issues, and has authored the textbook Medical Microbiology and Immunology for Dentistry, due to be published this month. He has been a reviewer of manuscripts submitted to more than 100 journals. He is the recipient of the International Association of Student Clinicians-American Dental Association Burton C. Borgelt Faculty Advisor Award, Pacific's Eberhardt Teacher-Scholar Award, and the Fellowship of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
Dr. Teresa Bergman, associate professor and graduate director and advisor for the Department of Communication in the College of the Pacific, was also honored with a faculty award at the recognition dinner. She received the Faculty Research Lecturer award, which was established by the Faculty Research Committee to recognize faculty with a record of meritorious research or artistic contributions during their service at the University.
