Application Process

The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has two sites for its Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program. 

  • Union City site is approximately 35 miles southeast of San Francisco.
  • Stockton site is located on the University of the Pacific campus in the Thomas J. Long Health Sciences Building. 

The core of the program involves advanced clinical treatment of patients requiring comprehensive general dental care. The AEGD Program at the sites are one-year accredited postgraduate residencies in general dentistry with an optional second year.  The second year allows greater flexibility to pursue individual interests, advanced clinical cases or research projects.

At this time, the residency positions in Stockton and Union City for the Class of 2008-2009 have been fulfilled. 

The AEGD Program Coordinator in San Francisco is currently managing the application process for the Union City and Stockton sites. Pacific uses the ADEA PASS External link -- Opens new windowapplication service and the National Dental Matching Program notification system. Most application materials must be submitted directly to PASS; however, some items must be submitted directly to the Pacific AEGD Program coordinator.  See below for detailed instructions.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be graduates of accredited dental school at the start of the residency year. Applicants are required to have passed the National Board Examination Part I. A dental license is not required.

Sequence of Steps to Apply for the Residency Year Beginning July 1, 2008

  1. Applicants are required to obtain an application packet from the ADEA PASS program (see below). PASS does not process all required application materials; some materials must be submitted directly to the AEGD Program coordinator.
  2. The PASS codes for the Pacific AEGD Programs are:
    • Stockton site:  101
    • Union City site:  165
  3. Applicants are required to obtain an application packet from the National Matching Services program (see below). Submit the applicant agreement to the National Matching Services program to receive your Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program registration number.
  4. An interview is required for acceptance into the program and will be granted only upon application completion and at the request of the director/assistant director.
  5. Submit a rank order list to National Matching Services. Match code numbers for the Pacific AEGD Programs are:
    • Stockton site:  2928
    • Union City site:  2929
  6. Obtain selection notification of the Match from National Matching Services.

Postgraduate Application Support Service (PASS)
The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry AEGD Program accepts application materials through the American Dental Education Association, Postgraduate Application Support Service (PASS). This service enables applicants to send an original copy of most application materials to PASS for distribution to all the programs that the applicant selects. PASS must receive application materials by November 1, 2007. Information and application materials for PASS can be obtained from:

Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program
The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry AEGD Program uses the National Matching Services Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program for notification of program acceptance. Applicants must submit an applicant agreement to National Matching Services and obtain a registration number. The deadline for registering with the Matching Program is October 15, 2007.

Each applicant and each program must submit a rank order list to National Matching Services.  Those rank order lists will be compiled and applicants and programs will be matched.  The Match applicant agreement and information can be obtained from:

Required Application Materials
Applicants submit Items #1 through #3 directly to the Pacific’s AEGD Program Coordinator and Items #4 through #8 directly to ADEA PASS.

  1. Small photograph approximately 2" X 2" (submit to AEGD Program Coordinator)
  2. Undergraduate transcripts (submit to AEGD Program Coordinator)

  3. Three letters of recommendation, other than Dean's letter (submit to AEGD Program Coordinator)
  4. C.V. or Resumé (submit to PASS)
  5. Dean's letter including grade point average, class standing and National Boards Scores Part I (submit to PASS)
  6. Dental school transcript (submit to PASS)
  7. Personal statement not more than 2 typewritten pages describing relevant past experience, career goals, and reasons for applying to an AEGD program (submit to PASS)
  8. Match registration number from the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program (submit to PASS)

Application Dates and Deadlines (dates will be updated when information is available)

  • June 1, 2007
    ADEA PASS begins accepting applications
  • October 3, 2007
    Deadline for registering with the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program
  • November 1, 2007
    Application materials must be received by ADEA PASS.
  • November 15, 2007
    Deadline for 2"x2" photographs, undergraduate transcripts and other required items previously listed must be received by the Pacific AEGD Program Coordinator in addition to all PASS requirements.
